VISUAL STUDIES: SESSION 1

In this class we practiced sketching, we sketched different bags in different ways. We learned how to start off a drawing, and learned how to manage speed.

Here are the questions I’d like to answer:

What do you think are some important skills to have so as to draw and design well?
Answer- A few skills that I think are important to draw and design well are perspective, observation and attention to detail. Practicing continuously is so important. We must be able to judge the object we plan on sketching with ease, this comes with practice. Understanding the creases and direction of a object makes an ideal sketch.

What are your strengths and weaknesses in drawing?
Answer- My weaknesses are that I make the first initial sketch too dark, so redrawing is messy and hard. I also sometimes struggle make everything in a scene proportionate. For example, if I’m making a scene of a park, the people will not be proportionate to the benches. My strengths are that I understand perspectives and angles, and ca look at something ad be able to sketch it. I take my time trying to understand a object.

We discussed the importance of drawing regularly to improve. How could you make any small
changes to your routine so as to draw more often?
Answer- A few small changes I’d make to my routine to sketch more often are that I’m going to start carrying a small notepad everywhere I go, so I can sketch when I travel in the tube or bus, because network doesn’t work down there anyway! I will try sketching everyday.
