In this task we had to shoot a perfume advertisement for a perfume, and then edit it. We had to capture the scent in the form of a video.
Here are a few questions I’d like to answer:
How did you experiment with different ideas in your styling choices for the film?
Answer- The scent I picked was Maison Margiela’s Replica Autumn Vibes. Since the perfume is fall scented, I wanted a very subtle but slightly nuanced form of the dark academia aesthetic. I wanted it to blend with nature as well, because I was shooting my video in a park. So I chose a lace nightdress with a dark leopard print on it. I wanted to keep the video very mellow and still close to nature, because I had shots in a pond and with geese as well. Apart from that I didn’t think too much about it because my location itself captured the essence of the scent. I even left my hair open to make it look more raw ad aligned to nature. I feel like the scent smells like wood ad nature, but in the autumn. So that is what I tried to portray.
How well did you develop the edits and filters to create your film?
Answer- I spent about an hour and a half to two hours to edit my video. I first trimmed the clips to fit the music. For the music I used Lana Del Rey’s song Honeymoon’s instrumental beginning. I also added a voice clip from the movie Moonrise Kingdom around the middle, because I feel like that movie kind of also served as an inspiration to the the kind of editing I was doing. After getting the music ready, I arranged clips in a mannerly order, where all the clips fell in place, and didn’t look awkward or sudden. I then added the text to show what perfume I was advertising in the end. I also used several filters to increase the exposure, make the clip grainier, increase the softness, and add a vintage film effect over it. I wanted the entire video to look like a fever dream, or what you’d imagine fall to be in a person.
What part of the process did you most enjoy and feel was successful?
Answer- I enjoyed shooting the clips the most, because I went to Kensington Park to shoot the video with a friend. We walked quite a bit to get to the park and enjoyed our walk there. The park was so beautiful and we fed the birds and played with dogs. We were also able to use clips of us playing with the birds and dogs which was cool. I ran around the grass in the cold, barefoot with nothing but a nightdress on, but it was so liberating. I felt like I witnessed the essence of fall while shooting the video. I also think the clips were the most successful bit of the video, because of how well the location went with the idea I had in my head, we were able to use clips of just us fooling around as clips for the advertisement.
